In the aftermath of the Christchurch terror attack on March 15 – an attack many in the Muslim community said they saw coming – Little announced he was fast-tracking a review of hate speech legislation. The 2018 survey provided the first nationally representative measure of the extent and nature of online hate speech in New Zealand. "To the best of our knowledge, this is the only study that compares annual trends in online hate in New Zealand." More than half (52 per cent) of Muslim respondents said they were personally targeted with online hate speech in the past 12 months. Seven out of 10 adult New Zealanders thought online hate speech was spreading.
