Has the UK economy stalled?

Good morning: “The UK economy has all but ground to a halt,” David Smith argued in his must-read Sunday Times column yesterday. Gross domestic product (GDP) data for December, to be published by the Office for National Statistics this morning, is forecast to show that month-on-month growth was flat, according to a survey of City economists by Reuters. Quarter-on-quarter growth is expected to come in at 0.3 per cent, down from 0.6 per cent in the third quarter. Alongside the GDP data we get the latest trade deficit and industrial and manufacturing output data. Jasper Lawler, head of research at London Capital Group, warns that the pound “could... move below $1.29 in the case of a surprise to the downside”.
