The enormous rainfall from Tropical Storm Harvey is already breaking records. As of Tuesday morning, the storm had dumped more than 49 inches, the greatest amount of rain ever recorded in the continental United States. Earlier Tuesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a new preliminary rainfall record southeast of Houston at Mary’s Creek at Winding Road measuring 49.32 inches. While historic, the rainfall has not yet broken the all-time record. “For the continental U.S., Harvey now holds the record for the most rain produced by a tropical system,” said Russ Schumacher, a professor at Colorado State University’s Department of Atmospheric Science.
