Harvard president compares fundraising changes to abolition of slavery

The president of Harvard University has apologized for likening the 13th amendment to the US constitution – which abolished slavery – to changes in how colleges raise funds. On Tuesday, the Boston Globe reported, Larry Bacow suggested that as the 13th amendment outlawed slavery, wealthy alumni could no longer be “owned” by their alma maters. “I regret that these comments caused offense,” Bacow wrote in an internal email which Harvard provided to the Guardian. In 2017, Harvard hosted a symposium that examined the relationship between slavery and higher-education institutions. Harvard accepted some $9m prior to Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea to prostitution charges in Florida.
