Harley-Davidson duty: U.S. President’s demand is ‘unfair’, says Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers

more-inThe Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the industry’s lobby group, has termed U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand for zero duties on Harley-Davidson motorbikes “unfair”. “We are exporting much less two-wheelers to the U.S., compared to what they are exporting to India,” Sugato Sen, Deputy Director-General, SIAM, told The Hindu. “India has already cut the customs duty on imported high-end motorcycles to 50%. This represented 0.4% of the total value of motorcycle and moped exports by India in the last fiscal, according to the data. The value of motorcycle and mopeds imported from the U.S. was $11.65 million in 2016-17.
