Americans looking for love lost at least $143 million to scammers last year, according to reports filed with the Federal Trade Commission. While many scams take place on dating websites, some victims have reported being approached elsewhere on social media, such as on Facebook or even through online games. The median reported loss to romance scams last year was $2,600. The remaining individuals paid with a mix that included cash or cash advances, credit cards, online payments, money orders and checks. Users of online dating services should try to verify information provided by those they speak with online, the agency said.
