News that Uber lost its license to operate in London past September 30 caught many by surprise. Uber drivers have faced Victorian-like "sweated labour" conditions, according to Labour MP Frank Field, who is also chair of the work and pensions committee, as reported by the Guardian last December. Realistically, no, driving a car using the Uber platform — because the drivers aren't employees — isn't like the conditions workers faced in Victorian times. One leaked set of Uber's internal numbers in 2015 showed that after costs, drivers in Detroit, Houston, and Denver respectively made $8.77, $10.77, and $13.17 an hour. But consumers become addicted to low costs.
