Dawn Jani Birley plays both Horatio and the narrator in a version of “Hamlet” also told through sign language. Birley says she was honest with “Prince Hamlet” director Ravi Jain, who had never worked with a deaf actor before. When Jain staged his first Prince Hamlet, “the out-of-the-box casting was young people playing old people. When Jain started Why Not Theatre in 2007, his first production, Prince Hamlet, was diverse in the nationalities of its cast members: Jain assembled a team of actors from Europe, Canada and the United States. We thought if we’re already blowing this idea out with Christine as Hamlet, why don’t we just break all the rules?
