HALIFAX—Halifax Regional Police are looking to spend almost $40,000 on a machine for detecting trace amounts of drugs and explosives. A request posted on the provincial government’s tender website on Tuesday seeks a supplier for an “IONSCAN 600 Portable Explosives and Narcotics Trace Detector.”Halifax Regional Police are looking to purchase an IONSCAN 600 explosives and narcotics trace detector, made by U.S.-based company Smiths Detection. The HRP request posted Tuesday says police are looking for quotations for the detector, plus 20 packs of swabs and training by the vendor. Documents included in the tender package indicate HRP are looking to spend $39,576, and the Nova Scotia Department of Justice is going to reimburse the municipality. In 2012, according to federal tender documents, the RCMP paid $59,645 for a similar, older model from Smith Detection, plus training for officers in Edmonton.
