The project, “The Ransom,” tells the story of the first people in the modern world to free themselves from slavery and create their own nation. The Times tracked each payment Haiti made over the course of 64 years, and calculated that Haiti ended up paying about $560 million in today’s dollars. “A silent scream has been in throats for decades about role U.S. played in depleting Haiti,” Mr. Gaspard said. But as The Times project noted, the country’s history in Haiti — or any talk of compensating Haitians for their losses — is not something many French officials frequently talk about.
