Haircut Day keeps growing in SouthlandKavinda Herath/Stuff Free Haircuts Day founder Melissa Aitken says the average Southlander does not realise how many people are living in poverty, homeless or struggling on a low income. A simple desire to help others has led to a growing community event in Southland. February would see the fifth biannual outing in Invercargill for the officially named Free Haircuts and Other Services for Southlanders in Need event, with demand for the day ever increasing, Aitken said. Although need locally might be severe and growing, New Zealand was still in a comparatively privileged position globally, Aitken said. The average Southland person did not realise how many people were living in poverty, homeless or struggling on a low income, Aitken said.
