Authorities in India have reported a surge in the number of smuggling activities being carried out at the borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. In the months of January and February alone, over 1,400 smugglers have already been apprehended by security personnel. Traditional smuggling of items such as illegal cattle, jewellery, and marijuana persists, but new and unusual items are also being illegally transported across the borders. Smugglers from Pakistan are now using drones to drop heroin and weapons in Punjab, and gangs on the eastern front are smuggling human hair, snake venom, and Phensedyl cough syrup. The human hair is finally taken to China and Taiwan to make wigs, and the Phensedyl cough syrup is sold in Bangladesh to people who cannot drink alcohol.
