Haines, Alaska, slowly recovering after destructive winter storm

Life in Haines, Alaska is slowly getting back to normal after a brutal winter storm pounded the region in early December, says a local government official, but residents are still dealing with heavy losses. Haines has since switched to "recovery mode," interim borough manager Alekka Fullerton told CBC on Dec. 30. The only exception to that is Beach Road, the site of a major landslide that destroyed four homes and left Haines residents David Simmons, 30, and Jenae Larson, 23, missing. The largest landslide, about 183 meters wide, took out four homes in the community of Haines. Sheri Loomis, a Haines resident who runs the popular Haines Chatters Facebook group, said the town was "looking good," but that there's "still a sadness in the community."
