At this point, it’s worth noting two things:(1)This is not your parents’ Senate – newer members play by a different set of rules. I’d trace this back 30 years or so and House partisans crossing over to the upper chamber. Harry Reid made the transition in 1987, followed two years later by Trent Lott. In today’s Senate, there are fewer cooler, calmer intellectuals willing to take a middle stance. As evidence, consider what occurred in the early days of 2006, when Samuel Alito was up before the Senate as George W. Bush’s second of two picks to the High Court.
