HRW urges Ethiopia to protect Sudanese refugees

October 17, 2024 (NAIROBI) – Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged the Ethiopian government to take immediate action to protect Sudanese refugees who fled from their country to escape the horrors of war. Since April 2023, tens of thousands of Sudanese have sought safety in Ethiopia, only to face violence and displacement. In an attempt to provide safety, authorities relocated thousands of refugees to a new camp in July. “These refugees have escaped horrific abuses in Sudan and came to Ethiopia seeking safety, not further threats to their lives,” said Laetitia Bader, deputy Africa director at HRW. “The Ethiopian government must uphold its obligations to protect refugees and relocate them away from the conflict zone,” Bader stressed.
