The High Court yesterday summoned the editor and a reporter f the Daily Sun to appear before it on May 28 to authenticate a report published by the newspaper in 2015 over the road accident and fake drivers. The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order during hearing a suomoto (voluntary) rule issued by it following the news item the same year. Deputy Attorney General Tapas Kumar Biswas told The Daily Star that following a report published on the Daily Sun on August 2, 2015 with headline “Road accident: 19 lakh fake drivers rule the highways”, the HC on August 3 the same year issued the suomoto rule. In the rule, the court asked the authorities to explain the actions that have been taken so far even though they have knowledge that a large number of vehicles are plying on the roads without valid driving licences and causing serious damage to lives of citizens. The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority has earlier submitted a reply to the HC in response to the rule, but the Daily Sun authorities are yet to authenticate the report on which the HC issued the rule.
