A gunman killed his girlfriend and two of her relatives at her Detroit home before wounding three officers and killing himself during a 14-hour standoff. It is believed at this stage that Smith killed Cynthia before shooting her mother and aunt outside the house and later wounding the three officers. During the Detroit confrontation, police reinforcements were eventually able to remove Cynthia's aunt and mother as well as Patricia's husband.
