Won 2012 Gujarat assembly election on Congress ticket.A minister in the cabinet of Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, contested second time from Chanasma constituency. His first three electoral attempts were from the Sami constituency in 1995, 1998, 2002 and 2007.Former health and family welfare minister of Gujarat, he contested from Sidhpur seat in north Gujarat. He was elected to the Assembly in 1990, 1995, 1998, and 2007, while losing in 2002 and 2012 Assembly elections. In 2012, he lost out to Congress candidate Balvantsinh Rajput.Deputy chief minister of Gujarat, contested from Mehsana constituency; was first elected to the Gujarat Assembly election in 1990 from the Kadi constituency and won subsequently in 1995 and 1998 too. He is one of the conveners of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS).The campaign-in charge of Congress, he contested from Dabhoi constituency.
