There were days in the spring when the country had half the number cases but twice as many deaths. Fatalities lag behind cases because COVID-19 is a rather slow-going illness. It can take longer still for an acute infection to result in death. Note that at the moment, the U.S. is less than a month into a sustained increase in cases.
