The eruption has affected more than 1.7 million people, mostly in the departments of Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez that remained under red alert Friday. Hot volcanic material, including fine cement-like matter and large rocks, moved through gorges on the sides of the mountain, emitting hot gases and carrying tree trunks torn up by the flow, the volcanology institute warned. It expected columns of ash rising as high as 16,000 to 20,000 feet above sea level. The disaster response agency Conred said it evacuated people who had returned to their homes in El Rodeo, a village near the volcano that was one of those affected by Sunday’s major eruption.
