A state of emergency was declared as a precaution due to forest fires late Monday in Greenstone, about 260 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay. The Ministry of Natural Resources has brought in several water bombers to help contain the fires. "[The water bombers] saved us because otherwise the municipal office would have burned," said Renald Beaulieu, mayor of Greenstone, which encompasses Geraldton, Longlac and the townships of Nakina and Beardmore. At one point a blaze was less than 500 metres from the municipal building in Geraldton. The fires have also led to some power outages as well as road closures.
