OTTAWA—The field has shrunk but the federal Green party expects eight leadership contenders to raise enough money by Tuesday’s deadline to secure a spot in the race to succeed longtime leader Elizabeth May. The winner will be the party’s first new leader since 2006, steering the party and its contingent of three MPs into the next federal election. Six candidates or their campaigns confirmed to the Star on Monday that they have fulfilled the requirements to appear on the final ballot. Green said she intends to run for the party in West Nova in the next general election and endorsed Merner. Green follows other candidates who previously aborted their campaigns, including Alex Tyrrell, the leader of the provincial Greens in Quebec.
