IDOMENI, Greece — Greek authorities sent hundreds of police into the country’s largest informal refugee camp Tuesday to support the gradual evacuation of the Idomeni site on the Macedonian border. On the eve of the evacuation operation, few at the camp appeared to welcome the news. Greek authorities have sent in cleaning crews regularly and have provided portable toilets, but conditions have been precarious at best, with heavy rain creating muddy ponds. Journalists were barred from the camp during the evacuation operation. In Geneva, UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards said the evacuation appeared to be taking place “calmly,” and the U.N. refugee agency was sending more staffers to Idomeni.
