They focused their study on the seas around Southeast Farallon Island, which lies off of the coast of San Francisco. 'When confronted by orcas, white sharks will immediately vacate their preferred hunting ground and will not return for up to a year,' said Dr Jorgensen. 'These are huge white sharks. White sharks typically gather at the Farallon Islands between September and December each year in order to prey on young elephant seals. 'On average we document around 40 elephant seal predation events by white sharks at Southeast Farallon Island each season,' Anderson said.
