For only the second time ever, scientists detected gravitational waves, the strange ripples in space-time first foreseen by Albert Einstein a century ago. Gravitational waves detected for a second timesupplied The collision of two black holes - a tremendously powerful event was detected for the first time ever by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or LIGO. The phenomenon occurs when two black holes collide and then merge with each other, releasing energy in the form of gravitational waves. The first detection of gravitational waves, announced February 11, was a milestone in physics and astronomy.
