Grading the Leafs: Defending the blue line

As we get to the Maple Leafs' back end – defencemen and goaltending – it should be noted changes are coming to the club's blue line. Word is already out the Maple Leafs are probably going to lose defenceman Igor Ozhiganov to the the KHL. ( File Photo )So half of what was – in my books – a better than advertised blue line will be gone. But when the Leafs had six healthy defencemen playing to their potential – right up until the trade deadline – the team’s save percentage was a healthy .913. Looked at another way, in the first 62 games, the Leafs were giving up an average of 8.8 high-danger scoring chances 5-on-5 per game.
