The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday approved to take necessary steps to utilize an online pre-paid transit card for the public transport service of Sri Lanka, the government said. It said this was the first step towards implementing an electronic system for charging fees in the public transport sector, which was introduced by Lanka Clear (Pvt.) Ltd., a local company affiliated with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The Cabinet approval was given on 02 October 2018 for the appointment of a monitoring committee comprised of representatives from all institutions of the public transport sector in order to implement a project for introducing an online transit card to be used in public buses and trains with the objective of circumventing inconveniences erupted due to payment with money.
