Govt to allocate Tk2,000cr for PPP projects

The government has allocated Tk2,000 crore in the proposed budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year to fund public-private partnership (PPP) projects. Finance Minister AMA Muhith did not mention the allocation in his budget speech at parliament on Thursday, but it is mentioned in brief in the budget documents. Under the new budget, 42 PPP projects have been approved in principle, of which agreements have been signed for three projects. The major projects that are in the pipeline for the new fiscal year include upgrading the Joydebpur-Debgram-Bhuta-Madanpur highway to four-lane highway, constructing 217km Dhaka-Chittagong Expressway, constructing multimodal transport hub of Dhaka airport, and constructing service lanes for Hatirjheel-Rampura-Banasree Ideal School and College. In the outgoing fiscal year, the government allocated Tk1,600 crore for PPP projects, but only Tk800 crore was disbursed for these projects.
