Finance minister Arun Jaitley. Currently, private financial institutions are the majority owners in GSTN with 51% stake, while the centre and states together hold 49%. According to the person in the know, finance minister Arun Jaitley has asked finance secretary Hasmukh Adhia to “examine the possibility” of converting GSTN into a majority government company or a 100% government company. GSTN was incorporated as a private limited company on 28 March 2013 under the UPA government. Over one crore businesses are registered on the GSTN portal.
