The National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), which works under the Home Ministry, took the decision to block the Facebook IDs, reports Bangla Tribune. NTMC Director Brig Gen Ziaul Ahsan on Thursday said a vested quarter has been actively circulating rumours and propaganda on social media, with the aim of tarnishing the image of the government. “The culprits opened fake Facebook IDs and pages named after media personalities and outlets, to spread confusion among the masses,” he added. “With a view to stopping propaganda and rumours on Facebook, the NTCM stepped forward to block the unauthorized IDs and pages,” he added, mentioning that at least 752 Facebook IDs and 1,332 pages under the name of the prime minister have been blocked as of January 27. According to the NTMC chief, the government also recently blocked 288 Facebook pages and 28 groups opened under the names of the Election Commission, army and navy.
