Governors’ unending war against judiciary, legislature, local govt autonomy


Following governors’ protest against financial autonomy for state judiciary and legislature, TUNDE AJAJA examines how the state executives are throwing caution to the wind to expand their influence and authority, at all costIn Nigeria’s political dispensation, governors are very powerful. Despite calls for financial autonomy for local governments to enable them to develop their areas, governors, under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, have vehemently opposed it. While the President maintained silence on the issue, the Federal High Court where the NGF filed the case declined the governors’ request. Already, the governors are reportedly threatening to go to court if the Federal Government insist on the executive order. There are also reports that the governors may bulge if state assemblies and judiciary agree to the terms to be determined by the governors.
