Government workers' sick days have fallen by as much as 45 per cent during 2020 compared to last year. The Defence Department also saw a 21 per cent decline, Australian Federal Police dropped 19 per cent, and Tourism Australia workers called in sick 45 per cent less than they did last year. 'Now, of course, flexibility has increased through working from home, the requirement to take sick leave, or incidence has obviously decreased.' The CSIRO recorded a 20 per cent decline in the number of sick days compared with 2019. In his annual report, Australian Public Service Commissioner Peter Woolcott said the commission implemented flexible working conditions to keep employees safe during the pandemic.
