THE government has resisted calls to keep golf courses and tennis courts open when new lockdown restrictions come in. Grassroots sport will be forced to stop during the initial month-long period which starts on Thursday, but there had been calls for a rethink on the closure of golf and tennis facilities. ‘People are able to use public spaces or walk or run in the park. These sports are uniquely built for social distancing.’The government will order indoor and outdoor leisure and facilities including gyms, pools, climbing walls and climbing centres and archery and shooting ranges to close. My concern is that many pools won’t reopen.’Former DCMS committee chair Damian Collins is among a group of MPs who have called on the government to allow under-18s to continue to participate in outdoor grassroots sport, including team games such as football.
