According to the CBC today, Sept. 22, a senior government source, who spoke to the news outlet on condition of anonymity, said that the government is expected to make an official announcement on Monday, about border measures lifting by the end of the month. The news comes on the heels of an open letter sent by several MPs and border-city mayors to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday, asking them to end the “unnecessary” rules at the border. Though mandatory vaccination, random testing and use of the ArriveCAN app may be on their way out, current rules on masking for passengers on planes and trains remain undecided, and will be up for debate in cabinet later on Thursday. Advocacy groups and airlines, including WestJet, have publicly opposed the mask requirement, saying that mask compliance often leads to disruptive behaviour onboard aircraft.
