Government approach to social interventions, taxation incoherent - Minority

General News of Tuesday, 3 February 2026Source: www.ghanaweb.comThe Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has expressed concern over what he describes as an unclear and inconsistent approach by the government in managing social intervention programmes and taxation. Speaking to journalists during a parliamentary leadership briefing ahead of the resumption of Parliament, Afenyo-Markin said several government initiatives were already showing signs of strain by the close of 2025, raising questions about their overall direction of economic and social policies. “Beyond the GoldBod, which has helped to stabilise the cedi, it is difficult to point to clear improvements in other areas. “We believe the government’s approach to social interventions and taxation has been incoherent. Afenyo-Markin urged the government to focus on policies that deliver real benefits to citizens across key sectors of the economy, rather than fragmented interventions that lack clear outcomes.
