It may be picturesque, but a stretch of State Highway 77 through the Rakaia Gorge is treacherous and a fatality waiting to happen, according to Methven woman Barbara Duffy. "Fortunately the car slid off the road where trees had not been removed and this prevented it rolling a further 100m and the likelihood of a fatality," Duffy said. "It is hair-raising seeing cars driving down on a frosty morning when black ice is covering parts of the road." He said the NZTA would regularly do winter maintenance and advise motorists of frost risk and apply grit as needed.
