The Gore District Council has lodged consent applications with Environment Southland to build a controversial new bridge across the Mataura River. A separate application has been made to Gore District Council for land use required under the Gore District Plan. Last month Gore District Council chief executive Steve Parry said the environmental impact of the bridge would be considered during the resource consent application process. If it goes ahead, the bridge will be the longest and tallest cable-stay design bridge in New Zealand at 39m high and 90m long. The Gore District Council hoped construction would begin next year.
