Goose chase

The identities of Ireland’s winter geese are easily confused. Six common species may be seen now, and they can be conveniently divided into three “grey” and three “black and white” geese. Among the former are pink-footed (from Greenland and Iceland), white-fronted (Greenland) and greylag. Many of the last are feral birds, while others have come from Iceland. Among the black and white kinds are barnacle geese from Greenland; these are sometimes accompanied by Canada geese, although some are feral year-round residents.
