Workers at Google are protesting against the technology company’s involvement in a US defence department programme that will use artificial intelligence to carry out drone strikes and other military operations. More than 3,000 employees of the Silicon Valley company have signed a letter to Sundar Pichai, their chief executive, about its work on Project Maven, a programme designed to rapidly accelerate the US military’s use of artificial intelligence, or AI, on the battlefield. “We believe that Google should not be in the business of war,” the letter says.
