Google may have created sentient AI for an engineer

A Washington Post article describes the story of an engineer from Google who believes that TheMDAan AI chatbot, has become sentient. Blake Lemoine, an engineer at Google, was put on paid administrative leave after sounding the alarm to his team and company management. What led Lemoine to believe that LaMDA was sentient was when he asked him about Isaac Asimov’s laws on robotics, and LaMDA’s speech led him to say that he “was not a slave”. In a statement to the Washington Post, a Google spokesperson said: “Our team – which includes ethics and technologists – examined Blake’s concerns under our AI Principles and informed him that the evidence does not support his claims. He was told there is no evidence that LaMDA is sentient (and that there is a lot of evidence to the contrary)“.
