"We would support the general notion of more privacy legislation, ideally that is harmonised with privacy rules that we are seeing in other countries around the world," Walker said. His comments come days after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made a similar call for globally consistent data rules, potentially similar to GDPR. Facebook, Google and the other digital giants are under substantial pressure after the New Zealand massacre was livestreamed on Facebook and then re-uploaded across the internet millions of times.
