Those of you familiar with the works of Charles Dickens may recognise them from "A Tale of Two Cities". Those of you who have been following advances in fields like artificial intelligence (AI) may see why Brin decided to quote them at the start of this year's letter. He adds "with this opportunity comes the need for tremendous thoughtfulness and responsibility as technology is deeply and irrevocably interwoven into our societies." Now aged 44, Brin calls out AI as the most significant development in computing in his lifetime, saying that the technology already has an astounding number of applications today.
