She and her fellow board members were appointed to keep Google's AI developments in check. But on April 4, Google said it was cancelling the panel, known as the Advanced Technology External Advisory Council (ATEAC). They weren't happy that Google saw James as someone who could provide "diversity of thought" to the council, adding that her inclusion "significantly undermines Google’s position on AI ethics and fairness." After all, Google could have just removed James from the panel and replaced her with someone else.
