Goods exports down 5pc in the year to August

Goods exports were down 5pc to €133bn in the year to August, compared to last year, due mainly to falling pharma sales to the US and a dip in sales to China. The CSO data shows exports are down so far this year as a result of falling sales of organic chemicals, pharmaceutical products, computers and electrical machinery. The EU accounted for 38pc of Ireland’s total goods exports in August (mainly Belgium, Germany and The Netherlands), while the US accounted for 32pc. Exports of medical and pharmaceutical products represented 43pc of total exports in the month. She said that while exports to the US are down in the year so far, the value of exports in the month of August this year is flat on last year.
