A Google search gives a figure in excess of 150 countries, which have adopted Goods and Services Tax or simply the GST, what India introduced at the stroke of midnight today. Speaking at the Tryst With Tax Conclave of India Today yesterday, Bibek Debroy asserted that "only 6 or 7 countries, not more than that" have implemented GST. Debroy also asserted that before India, "only country in the world which is federal and has GST is Canada." The RBI took notes from the GST experiences of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand and Russia.
