ANG gained fame in his younger days as an orang wayang (showbiz personality) on Penang island and in Kubang Pasu in northern Kedah. Those days, the villagers came in droves to watch the screening of mostly Malay films. A resident of Balik Pulau himself, Ang said the majority of the Malay villagers treated him like one of the family. “Those were the good old days when colour, race or religion did not come into the picture,” said Ang. Tan also enjoyed watching cowboy films during her younger days at the open-air shows.
