Scientists in the Solomon Islands have discovered a sharp-toothed rat that can punch through coconut. Photos of the only know specimen of the giant rat Vika, taken before its death. “They told me about this giant rat they called Vika,” he said. Lavery knew giant rats exist in the Solomons — but of the few species to have been documented, some had not been seen since the 19th century. They compared it to every rat known to have existed in the Solomon Islands — giant or otherwise.
