The Golden Globes clawed back a modicum of credibility last night by doling out trophies to what can only be described as the best of a bad bunch. After weeks of controversy, during which the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the Globes, was accused of everything from financial irregularities to structural racism, and duly pilloried for delivering an ill-informed nominations list (James Corden for The Prom? ), the ultimate selection of winners proves that somebody in there, at least, knows their cinema. The heartfelt road movie Nomadland was the big winner, snagging the best motion picture (drama) award, as well as best director for the relatively untested Chloe Zhao, and setting the stage for an unstoppable Oscar triumph in April.
