Going alone contributed to paua diver's death

An Invercargill man’s decision to go paua diving without a buddy contributed to his death, a coroner has found. She became concerned and asked a member of the public, a Mr McMaster, to check on him. Mr McMaster swam towards Mr Tautari and realised he was floating face down in the water. The police national dive squad conducted an inquiry to determine any factors that might have contributed to Mr Tautari’s death. Divers should abandon their weights when they start to get into difficulty; should not make themselves hyperventilate before free diving; and should know their limitations, and not take any unnecessary risks.
