UNIVERSITY professor Emma Porio laments jokingly that the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis has forced her and two friends — unofficially the Walking Ladies of Alta Vista Village in Quezon City — to suspend their daily morning jog around the place. She is also arranging the online thesis defense sessions of her graduate students. On her wish list is that concerned government officials “not engage in corruption” in these trying times by giving to the people the assistance due them from the government, overseas organizations and the local private sector. Vasquez’s advice is apparently based on information she gets from radio, television and social media alleging shenanigans of allegedly crooked public servants. To Mateo Vicencio, a 63-year-old poet and freelance journalist, the coronavirus outbreak has afforded him a “greater opportunity to bond longer and more deeply” with his family.
